How to Yarn Over (yo)

Yarn overs are a type of increase commonly used to create decorative eyelets in your knitting.

1.

For a yarn over between two knit stitches, bring your working yarn to the front of your work like you would for a purl stitch. Then knit your next stitch, allowing the working yarn to fall across the top of your right needle.

For a yarn over between two purl stitches, bring your working yarn upwards and back over the top of your right needle, returning it to the front of your work - creating a loop around your right needle. You're now ready to purl your next stitch.

For a yarn over between a purl and a knit stitch, bring your working yarn upwards and back over the top of your right needle, then knit your next stitch.

For a yarn over between a knit and a purl stitch, bring your working yarn to the front of your work like you would for a purl stitch, then bring your working yarn upwards and back over the top of your right needle, returning it to the front of your work. You're now ready to purl your next stitch.

5.

When knitting the following row treat the loops created by the yarn overs like regular stitches.
