The Endless Purple Scarf
Back when I first started knitting, I started this scarf and it feels like I'll never finish it.
Some projects feel like they'll never end, I've experienced that a lot with this scarf and it's not even close to being finished. It was one of the first projects I'd cast on after making a few garter stitch scarves and I've still not completed it.
The pattern for this scarf is essentially knit 2 (slipping knitwise at the start of each row), purl 2, with an odd number of stitches and creates this ribbed effect. I do like how this looks and think it'll be nice when I complete it one day, but for a few different reasons I'm not making a huge amount of progress with it.
I think one of the main issues I have with this scarf is that it's not a particularly exciting project. It's quite a simple scarf so I'm not hugely eager to get it done so that I can wear it, as I already have a number of scarves and cowls that I really enjoy wearing with more interesting designs. Plus, the yarn I opted for is just a single colour, in other projects I've started since this one I tend to opt for variegated yarn as I find it more interesting to work with and see how the colours turn out. For both of these reasons I find that this project tends to get pushed to the bottom of the pile and I tend to choose to work on something I'm more excited to wear. Plus, scarves are obviously quite long and due to the ribbed effect it's actually more stitches wide than you would expect, so progress isn't very quick when I am working on it. I still have another cake of yarn to add to this scarf too and I'm not convinced I'll ever get round to it.
I do think I've learnt a lot from this scarf which helps me choose projects going forwards. I really appreciate now how important it is to take the time to pick out patterns you really love and would be excited to wear, as it keeps you motivated to keep going even when a project seems to be taking a long time. In addition, the yarn you choose can make a project more exciting to work on, as you get to see how the colours turn out in your finished project. Even just choosing yarn which goes with an item of clothing you own really well can help keep you motivated to get a project done. I find with all of my newer projects I'm always really excited to work on them as really can't wait to wear them.
I want to finish this scarf one day, so hopefully at some point I'll pick it back up.
