My Small Project Bag Collection
Over the past year I've built up a small collection of project bags, each one serves a different purpose.
If you're not familiar with project bags the name is pretty self explanatory, they're bags used to store and transport your projects, which in my case are knitting and crochet projects. I didn't know that project bags existed until I'd already been knitting for several months, I would usually just try to slot my knitting into my handbag which wasn't very practical. As soon as I found out about project bags I was on the lookout for one which would be an appropriate size, practical and look nice.
My first project bag was this cream project bag from The Little Grey Girl (purchased from Spectrum Fibre's website), this is quite a small bag but not my smallest. I tend to use it to carry smaller projects such as cowls. I find I can fit a 100g cake of yarn, plus my needles, row counter and tape measure in this bag. I actually got this for my birthday in July and it's probably my most used project bag, I've already had to sew the wrist strap back on so it has clearly had some heavy usage.
Shortly after I got my cream project bag I purchased this larger cactus-print drawstring bag, also from The Little Grey Girl. I purchased this to use for storing my larger projects and often use it for carrying multiple projects. This bag is quite large and has some internal pockets too. I don't tend to use the internal pockets, sometimes whilst I'm knitting I'll put my needle point protectors in one of the pockets to make them easier to find when I need to put my project back in the bag. When I've tried using the pockets in the past I've had trouble with things falling out of them and into the main area of the bag, so I tend to keep everything either in the main area or in my notions pouch. At the moment I've got a jumper, a scarf and my notions pouch stored in this bag and I could probably fit more. One feature I do prefer about this bag when compared to the smaller cream bag is the wrist strap. On the other bag the wrist strap is cotton whereas the larger one's strap is suede, which makes it much softer and more comfortable to keep on your wrist.
As I've already mentioned my notions pouch I thought I should quickly talk about that too. My notions pouch is also from the Little Grey Girl, it's a small navy tweed pouch and can fit a surprising amount. I usually keep quite a lot in this pouch: needle point protectors, stitch counters, a tape measure, tapestry needles, cable needles, a needle threader, stitch markers, some scrap yarn and a small pair of scissors. I think even if you don't want to purchase a project bag, some kind of small pouch for little things like these notions can be really handy to stop anything from getting lost.
My third and final project bag is this Lava Landscape bag from Woolly Originals. You may recognise this from my Yarndale 2019 post as that's where I purchased this bag. I spotted Woolly Originals on Instagram a few days before Yarndale and knew I had to add one of these bags to my collection and was really happy to get one. The Lava Landscape design is inspired by the alpine plants and volcanic landscape of the Þórsmörk Valley in central Iceland. The exterior of the bag has been machine knit and features some hand embroidered details, it has pink lining which matches the wrist strap. This is the smallest bag in my collection, I originally purchased it to use for cowls as I was using my cream bag for socks, but due to the size of this bag I decided to use it for socks instead. I can probably fit as much in this as I can in the cream bag, but as it's a bit smaller it's a little more tricky to get larger items, such as a full 100g cake of yarn or an almost complete cowl through the opening. This project bag definitely has a very premium feel, it's clear that it's constructed of high quality materials and I'm very tempted to add more Woolly Originals bags to my collection.
At present I'm not planning to purchase any more project bags, I may eventually purchase another Woolly Originals bag in a larger size, but I think at the moment my current collection fits my needs. I'll be sure to let you know if there are any additions to my collection!
