Spectrum Fibre 2020 Advent Calendar
For December 2020 I purchased two advent calendars, one of these was from Spectrum Fibre.
Spectrum Fibre is one of my favourite yarns brands, known for lots of vibrant and unique colour-ways which I've used for a range of projects. I hadn't tried a yarn advent calendar before, so Spectrum Fibre's calendar seemed like a great choice. I opted for the twisted merino sock version, there was also a merino DK version available.
The calendar was presented in a black box, with pink foil logo and magnetic closure. The calendar consisted of 24 pink paper bags sealed with numbered stickers for each day; each bag contained a 20 gram mini skein of yarn.
The calendar included a range of colour-ways, some from Spectrum Fibre's existing collection, as well as several which were brand new. Rather than appearing as an ordered fade the colours varied massively from day-to-day, for example an acid green is followed by a bright pink. This really did make each day a surprise rather than being able to predict what could come next. In the photos for this post I arranged the colours into the order in which they were opened. Due to the variety of colours included I'm sure that they could be rearranged into more of a fade if that would be more suitable for a project.
I haven't yet decided how I'm going to use the yarn. I think I'll most likely re-order the colours once I've decided on a project. I'm currently thinking I might design a shawl using the yarn, rather than using an existing pattern.
I also find it much easier to put together fades when I can see the colours in person and thought the advent mini skeins would be great to utilise for this. I have a few full skeins in my stash that I've been planning to use as part of fades for various patterns. I'm planning to arrange those skeins with some of the mini skeins, in order to help me decide which colour-ways to purchase as full skeins to complete the fades.
I really looked forward to opening a new mini skein each day throughout advent and would definitely recommend the Spectrum Fibre advent calendar. I hope to purchase it again next year!
