Step 4: Adding the Fastening

For the final part of the course you'll be learning how to finish off the I-cord and how to add a fastening for the bracelet using a Scaffold Knot.

1.

Your I-cord should now be complete so you can bind off your three stitches and break your yarn, ensuring you leave a tail which is at least 6" / 15 cm long.

2.

To close up the ends of the I-cord (this step is optional) thread the tail from the bind off edge onto a tapestry needle, pass it through one of the strands at the start of the bind off, then through one of the strands at the end of the bind off. You may need to repeat this for the cast on edge, or you may just wish to pass the tail through the centre of the cast on edge to adjust its alignment.

3.

Bring the two ends of the I-cord together, you’ll be using both tails for the Scaffold Knot. I find this easiest to do on a flat surface and you may wish to thread the left tail onto a tapestry needle.

Tip: Ensure you tie the Scaffold Knot close to the ends of the I-cord.
4.

Place the left tail over the right tail.

5.

Bring the left tail over the right tail twice, so there are two loops around the right tail.

6.

Bring the left tail through the two loops from left to right.

7.

Pull on both tails to tighten up the knot.

8.

When you slide open the bracelet, one of the tails will slide through the Scaffold Knot. Open the bracelet as wide as you need it to be to put the bracelet on, then tie a knot in the tail which slides through the Scaffold Knot to act as a stopper. The yarn will be cut after the knot, so if you would like these strands to be longer you can move the knot to be further along.

9.

Slide the bracelet closed, so it’s how it’ll be when you’re wearing it. Now tie a knot in the other tail at the same distance from the Scaffold Knot as the knot on the first tail.

10.

Cut both strands of yarn after the knots and your bracelet is now complete!
