How to Join to Knit in the Round With Circular Needles

When working in the round using circular needles, after you've cast on your stitches you'll need to join to start knitting in the round. Knitting in the round also creates a slight step in the cast on edge, which can easily be resolved when weaving in your ends.

1.

After casting on your stitches, hold the needle with the working yarn in your right hand and the other needle in your left hand.

2.

Place a stitch marker on your right needle to mark the beginning of the round.

3.

Knit into the first stitch on the left needle.

4.

Continue knitting across all of the stitches.

Tip: Knitting in the round will create a slight step in the edge of the project at the beginning of the round - this is because you're knitting in a spiral. It's easy to resolve this step when you weave in your ends. You simply need to bring the end you're weaving in across the gap where the step is visible, so it matches the other neighbouring stitches and smooths the step. For example, if you've used a long tail cast on, you'll see a series of V's along the cast on edge. At the beginning of the round there'll be a single bar which looks like a V missing one of its sides, you can just bring the end you're weaving in across this gap and down into the middle of the neighbouring V to add the missing side.
