The Purl Stitch for Beginners

After first learning the knit stitch, the purl stitch is the next essential stitch to learn.

1.

Bring your right needle to the right of the first stitch on your left needle and through the front of that loop.

2.

Hold onto both of your needles with your left hand and with your right hand pick up your working yarn.

Tip: The working yarn is the yarn which goes from your work to the ball of yarn.
3.

Wrap your working yarn around the needle at the front, from right to left.

4.

Pick your right needle back up and keep hold of your working yarn so it's still quite taught.

5.

Slide the right needle downwards, ensure the yarn we wrapped around it stays in place and push the needle backwards so it's behind the left needle, with the yarn still wrapped around it.

6.

Slide the loop at the end of the left needle off the needle.
